If you visit a web site or web page, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http:// . This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecured' language. In other words, it is possiblefor someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website!
But if the web address begins with https:// , that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

You understand why this is so important, right?
If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card
information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.

If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number.

PASS IT ON (You may save someone a lot of grief).

Microsoft launches free Web publishing tools WebMatrix

Microsoft launched free Web publishing tools today in a new software suite called WebMatrix.

The software is targeted at Web developers who may be using free open-source software to build websites. WebMatrix includes tools for running a website, including a Web server, database and Web frameworks. It also includes a tool for running search-engine optimization reports to help developers make their sites more prominent in Web searches. It's available in nine languages.

The WebMatrix tools work with free Web publishing platforms such as WordPress, Joomla!, DotNetNuke and Umbraco.

"The target audience for WebMatrix is the universe of web developers that aren’t already hard-core .NET and ASP developers," said Jon Rooney, senior product manager with the Web platform team. He said the tool is powerful enough for Web designers working at agencies to use.

"There’s a whole market out there for people who are using various open-source products who want to do things like blogging. They are looking for inexpensive. free tools," said Al Hilwa, an analyst who covers application development software at IDC, a research firm in Framingham, Mass. "WebMatrix hits the spot for that kind of thing. It’s a way for Microsoft to reach what's typically not its core base of developers."

Hilwa compares it to Microsoft's FrontPage software. "A long time ago Microsoft had a thing called FrontPage. It was a very different tool but hit at a similar market, people who want to do quick and dirty websites who are not programmers."

Here is where you can download the free WebMatrix software.

Also, Microsoft has made some video tutorials you can watch.

Ref: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com

Android Finally Beats iPhone in US Sales: Variety Wins

Android fans will be celebrating the news that Google's smartphone OS has passed Apple's iPhone in total US market share. But the reality is that the sales dominance of Android was inevitable.
In the first quarter of 2010, Apple secured a 21% market share, Android surged to 28%, and RIM's BlackBerry held strong at 36%. I don't mean to ignore BlackBerry here, but they've been dominating sales for so long, and with so little change in their fundamental business, that they're barely worth discussing from a sales perspective. It'd be like writing a post about how U2's latest album is selling well.

It was really a foregone conclusion that eventually Android would beat the iPhone in sales, for a bunch of simple reasons (including the recent study showing Android dominating mobile web use). iPhone OS is limited to one smartphone, on one network (the second-place network in terms of customers), and offers only one real model at a time (the iPhone 3G is technically still available but it's not dramatically different in design or functionality from the 3GS). Android, on the other hand, is available in several iterations from several different manufacturers in several different price points on every single major network. Want a keyboard? Go for a Motorola Cliq or Droid. Like HTC's Sense UI? Try the Droid Eris, Hero, or Incredible. Want to buy your GooglePhone direct from Google? Opt for the Nexus One. Hate your life? Try one of those Samsung phones with the custom UI that Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan compared to various unsavory bodily excretions.

So of course Android eventually came to top iPhone in market share, if not mindshare. It hearkens back to that whole Windows vs. Mac OS argument, with Android taking the Windows path: multiple manufacturers, designs, and price points leads to bigger sales, if not greater customer satisfaction.

This will all be shaken up nicely by the end of the year: Microsoft is due to launch their groundbreaking Windows Phone 7 phones and HP may re-launch Palm's WebOS with new hardware and enough money to break into the big time. But Android will probably continue to gain users (and possibly take over the world).

Fast Company http://www.fastcompany.com/1643889/android-finally-beats-iphone-in-us-sales-variety-wins

Twitter Zaps Bug By Wiping Out Followers

Twitter users had a big shock on Monday when they checked into the micro-blogging service. Their follower and following numbers were at 0, meaning they were suddenly very unpopular or something was seriously wrong with the site.

It was the latter, of course. To kill a bug that allowed a user to force other users to follow him or her, Twitter temporarily reset all follower/following counts to zero, according to the Twitter Status blog. Everything was back to normal by 11 a.m. Pacific.

"We identified and resolved a bug that permitted a user to "force" other users to follow them. We're now working to rollback all abuse of the bug that took place," the company said.

The glitch didn't cause protected (private) updates to become public, according to Twitter, which did not report the number of users impacted by the bug.

According to tech blog Gizmodo, the security hole allowed users to get any fellow Tweeter--even famous folk with "Verified Accounts"--to follow them.

Using Twitter's web interface, you could have tweeted "accept conanobrien" (that's Gizmodo's example, but any username would have worked), waited a few moments, and then checked your list of followers.

Voilà! Next, it could cut out the ISPs as well by offering internet plans itself.

With a wealth of infrastructure already in place, Google recently announced it was taking the next step by building an experimental fibre-to-the-home network in parts of the US servicing initially between 50,000 and 500,000 homes.

Google plans to connect these homes to the internet at blistering speeds of 1Gbps. By comparison, the upcoming National Broadband Network in Australia is predicted to offer about 100Mbps.

"I think Google is gearing up to be potentially quite a formidable competitor to existing telcos and ISPs, given their moves into the infrastructure level," Warren Chaisatien, research director and principal analyst at Australian firm Telsyte, said.

Indeed, at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google chief executive officer Eric Schmidt was heckled by telco representatives in the audience who feared that Google was increasingly competing with them not only on the infrastructure level, but also by selling its mobile phone, the Nexus One, directly to consumers online, and by releasing apps such as Google Voice, which allows users to bypass the networks to make voice calls.

Schmidt stressed the Google was purely experimenting in an effort to see what was required to bring networks up to 1Gbps, which could pave the way for more exciting applications and convince telcos to upgrade their networks.

Analysts aren't buying it. "I think what we are seeing today is that Google is conquering the world, starting from online content but now they are building infrastructure," Chaisatien said.

Chaisatien believes that, in the next five to 10 years, the ISP, telecoms and utilities industries will merge to form "smart grids". He said this was "one of the key arenas that Google intends to play very strongly in".

Steve Dalby, chief regulatory officer with iiNet, said the ISP saw Google as a significant player in the online world but did not fear it any more than other potential competitors.

Peter Coroneos, chief executive of the Internet Industry Association, which counts both Google and the ISPs as members, said increasing competition between Google and telcos would only provide better outcomes for consumers.

He pointed to the roll-out of cable networks in the US, which unlike in Australia are not controlled by existing telco players, but by companies traditionally in the television space. The end result is consumers get more choice and cheaper access to the internet.

"What we're witnessing is technological convergence and, in the long term, people are going to be getting their internet access from many different sources," Coroneos said.

"Change is necessarily painful but the successful well-managed companies will always adapt, and that's why in the face of the cable threat in the US the telcos are still profitable companies."

Google's push into infrastructure will inevitably add to fears surrounding its overwhelming corporate power, and increase regulatory heat on the company. But Coroneos pointed out that Facebook this week overtook Google as the most trafficked site in the US, showing that dominance can never be assured.

"Competition is important and we have very strong laws in Australia to prevent abuse of market power ... so you would expect our competition laws to keep it in check," he said.

Source: smh.com.au

Microsoft unleashes Internet Explorer 9

Microsoft yesterday unveiled a very early edition of its next-generation browser, IE9. So early, in fact, that it's more "pre" than pre-release, pre-beta or even pre-alpha.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to "IE9 Platform Preview."

That's a new name for Microsoft, and one meant, as one company manager said yesterday, to evoke the "major change" the software maker believes it's taking in Internet Explorer development.

Just what is Platform Preview? Can you even run it? And if so, do you want to?

Those are just some of the first questions you'll undoubtedly have over the months ahead as Microsoft starts adding muscle to the bare bones framework of IE9.

Microsoft's calling this a "Platform Preview." Is that just a fancy name for beta? Not even close.

This build is not a fully functional browser by any stretch. It lacks critical user features, including an address bar (what?) and a back button. Instead, Microsoft is billing this as a lightweight frame wrapped around the IE9 rendering, layout and JavaScript engines that it's passing around so developers and the technically adventurous can try it out and let Microsoft know what they think.

Will there be a beta? Yes, says Microsoft. What it's not saying is when it will ship a feature-complete beta. And since this is the first time that the company's cranked out what's essentially a developer pre-alpha -- or even pre-pre-alpha -- there's no history to go on to speculate when that might be.

Can I run the preview in Windows XP? No.

IE9's graphics processor powered-acceleration requires Direct2D and DirectWrite, APIs created for Windows 7 , then back-ported last October to Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2). Windows XP? Flat out of luck.

Will IE9 run on Windows XP when it ships in final form? Don't count on it.

In its own FAQ , Microsoft took on the question, but didn't answer it. "It's too early to talk about features of the Internet Explorer 9 Beta," the company said.

But the chances that IE9 will run on the 2001 OS are slim to none. Elsewhere in that same FAQ, Microsoft said as much when it noted that IE9 relies on "technologies [that] depend on advancements in the display driver model introduced first in Windows Vista." That's the tip-off, as Vista completely departed from the XP driver model, one of the issues that gave early Vista users fits.

It would be impossible to backport those technologies to XP, economically brainless to do so for an OS slated for retirement in four years, or both.

When will Microsoft release IE9? The company isn't saying.

How do I use the Platform Preview without an address bar? To browse to a page, select Open from the Page menu, or press Ctrl-O. In the Open Web Page dialog that pops up, type the destination URL, then click OK.

If I download the Platform Preview, what happens to the real Internet Explorer? Nothing. The preview and IE7 or IE8 co-exist peaceably, a new twist for Windows, which won't allow users to install, say, both the creaky IE6 and the newer IE8.

Do I have to have IE8 on the PC before I can try the preview? Yes.

That's not a problem for people running Windows 7, since IE8 is bundled with the OS, but if you're running Vista, you must first upgrade to IE8, if you haven't already. Windows Vista (and anyone running Server 2008) users must also have installed the October 2009 Platform Update that, among other things, brought Windows 7's hardware acceleration support for 2D, 3D and text to the older operating system.

I watched the webcast of the MIX10 keynote, where the Microsoft presenters must have said "HTML5" a hundred times. What is HTML5? The next-generation of HTML (hypertext markup language), the underlying development language of the Web.

A lot of the interest in HTML5 revolves around how it could replace rich-media plug-ins like Adobe's Flash or Microsoft's Silverlight for embedded audio and video. Apple is a proponent of HTML5, for instance, because it could replace Flash -- a technology the company, especially CEO Steve Jobs, seems to dislike at best, despise at worst -- for playing video.

Other browser makers, including Mozilla (Firefox), Google (Chrome), Apple (Safari) and Opera have been beating the HTML5 drum for some time, so Microsoft's late to the party. But as Sheri McLeish, an analyst with Forrester said today, "When Microsoft gets serious about something, you'd better be ready to get out of the way."

For more on IE9 and HTML5, check out Paul Krill's story in InfoWorld .

And FYI ... by our count, Microsoft's people used the term HTML5 just 39 times in Tuesday's MIX10 keynote.

Will Microsoft update the preview? How often? Yes, about every eight weeks, says Dean Hachamovich, the general manager for IE.

Will IE9 be the first Internet Explorer browser not released in conjunction with a new version of Windows? No, but unless Microsoft boosts Windows 8 development to light speed or delays IE9 for a couple of years, it will be the first since 2001, when Microsoft launched IE6 just months before the debut of Windows XP.

Where do I get IE9 Platform Preview?Here .

You'll also find a short user guide The offering seems to have interesting merits, however.

The product comes available for Windows XP and Vista/7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit installations. The Windows XP installer is slightly bigger than the Vistainstaller but the amazing part is that the entire package is a mere 8MB.

We were impressed at how quick the program installed on our Vista installation. Microsoft seems to have accomplished something that seemed be a holy grail in the world of antivirus – a small program with a small footprint. In reality, this what an antivirus should be – small, yet powerful. Ok, we’ll hold back on producing it a success yet because it is not.

The interface of the product is as simple as you can image. A scan took a mere 15 minutes and we threw many viruses at it. The trick is not standard antivirus but the fact that many of its competitors seem to be going away having to rely on signature updates but to a combination. For example, Norton’s new offering for 2010, seems to be using this approach. A computer program is a representation of the human mind and if the human mind is evolving but computer code is not, then new viruses and antivirus can easily render the product useless.

The resources used by the product seems to be very lightweight. Security Essentials uses around 80-100MB of RAM and 75% of CPU time during a full scan. During normal activity, the application uses less than 8MB of RAM and rarely registers any CPU activity.

As mentioned, scanning took very little time and resources. Once a virus was detected, a large system tray pop-up appears so you can remove the infected file, quarantine it, view further details, or allow it. You have the option to send the information to Microsoft or not.

In conclusion, the product is good but not good enough. After all, you can’t get all the features of similar but full featured products by other antivirus makers. But for a free product, it is worth taking a look.

During our experience, we found that free is not always good. We found mediocre products in AVG and Avast, Avira. Because they are free, they are always trying to convince you to upgrade to their charged version. But if their free version is already so mediocre, that makes me think twice about handing them my money. The other side of the coin is that the charge product could definitely be better.

To download Microsoft Security Essentials, Please click here http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Test has been conducted by Ronny Ko for Bityard Alpha.

Internet ScamS - A Good TOpic......

Internet Scams are a dime a dozen. Many of the internet scams that we report on originally started as offline scams but made their way to the online world.

Everything from cheesy MLM programs to online versions of the same scams we have reported on in other articles and almost anything else scammers can dream up. Internet scams don't only waste your time but can really cut into your pocket book as well.

Before you buy any business opportunity that is Internet based, you should do the following:

Make sure they list contact information. Names of people who are involved with the site, phone numbers, an address etc. An e-mail address is fine when someone isn't asking for money but when companies are asking for your hard-earned cash, e-mail isn't enough in our opinion.
x
Go to a few sites that report on scams (like www.mazu.com or www.worldwidescam.com). Do not waste your time with the Better Business Bureau. The Better Business Bureau is not a government agency plus they have no real power. I have heard as many complaints about the Better Business Bureau as some of the scams out there.
x
See what kind of return policy they have. Most business opportunities should at least offer a 30-day trial when you are checking them out.
x
Lastly, got to a search engine (we like Google or a meta-engine like Metacrawler) and see if you can find any dirt or complaints about the company. This is hardly a science and I know that people tend to complain more than they praise, but you might be able to find something out. If you find one or two people complaining, ignore it. If you find 30 or 40, something is going on.
Good luck in your online adventure. The Internet scams are out there.

Information ABOUT EMAILS

Information you need to know about your email

Change your password often. The quick act of changing your password can ensure your e-mail remains private. In addition, passwords that use both letters and numbers are harder to break.
Don't share your password. Most e-mail administrators will not ask for your password. Do not be duped by malicious e-mails asking you for your password. This is a well-known, although not-too-common trick designed to fool you into sharing your password. As a rule, never share it with anyone.
Never open attachments from unknown sources. They may contain what are known as "letterbombs" or "viruses," which can damage your PC.
Always remember to sign out when you are done. It's quick, easy and may save your account from unwanted trespassers. If you are using a public terminal, at an internet cafe for example, it is advised that you close the browser you were using when you are ready to end your Internet session.
Don't reply to unsolicited messages ("spam") mail, or other harassing or offensive mail. By responding, you only confirm that you are a person with an active e-mail address who can be plagued with constant unwanted e-mail solicitations. Instead, forward the unsolicited message to the customer service department of the source's e-mail (usually of a form similar to abuse@[implicateddo main].com) . To help control spam, BelizeMail provides members with "filters" for incoming mail. These can easily be set up to send certain messages (such as those that include certain words) directly to your online trash can.
Make sure that you are using the most up-to-date Internet software (e.g. browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator). More recent versions often offer enhanced security protection.
Always use a secure network. Most corporate networks and Internet service providers are protected by administrators who watch for potential security problems and act to protect users from "hackers" (malicious users) who may try to steal personal information that is transferred through the network. Although the risk is small, use caution when on any unfamiliar network. Use stations maintained by sources you trust, or ask if the Internet terminal you are using is protected against security break-ins.

Use common sense when you're on the Internet and maintain a healthy dose of skepticism. It will play just about anything too.

Youtube - http://www.youtube.com
Youtube is maybe an odd choice to put into the video playback area but there's a good reason for it. You can upload your videos to Youtube quite happily for free and there are hundreds upon thousands of hours of footage on there. From the illegal to the completely random Youtube has more video playback options than your wildest dreams.

Audio

Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

Winamp – http://www.winamp.com
While not open source, it is free and very good indeed. Far better than iTunes in my personal opinion.

Amarok - http://amarok.kde.org/
This is one of the best media players I have ever encountered, unfortunately it's purely limited to Linux (KDE environments only) so it's beyond the reach of Windows users and the "Ubuntu mainstream". It's amazing though and I highly recommend it.

Foobar2k - http://www.foobar2000.org
Foobar2000 is an advanced audio player for the Windows platform. I use it. Simple.

Avast! Home edition - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Also quite popular and available for free.

Antivir - http://www.free-av.com/
A free antivirus application (although it doesn't detect spyware). It apparently has one of the best detection rates out of the free antiviruses on offer.

Clamwin - http://www.clamwin.com/
A free antivirus with a high detection rate for infected files. It's not very invasive because it doesn't do on-access virus scanning - you specifically need to say which folders to scan. This is both good and bad - good if you're IT savvy because you don't need on access scanning because you're not stupid enough to do "dodgy" things unprotected. It's bad if you're not because it won't tell you that there's a problem until you tell it to look.

Comodo Firewall - http://www.comodo.com/products/free_products.html
Comodo Firewall, rated by PC Magazine Online as an Editor's Choice, constantly monitors and defends your PC from internet attacks. It's easy to install and use and passes the industry's most stringent firewall "leak" tests.

Windows Defender - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive. It's Microsoft though, but good enough I suppose. Not my sort of thing but a lot of people use it.

Spyware Terminator - http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Spyware gets terminated. I've used many many alternatives and this is the single greatest one around. It has a tiny footprint (only a few Kb of RAM) and doesn't need installing. Excellent.

Azureus - http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
One of the most popular torrent clients available, this Java built monster does the job very well. My gripe with it is that it munches it's way through your RAM at an alarming rate (being a Java application). Good though, just a bit hungry for machines are left online 24/7/365 like mine is.

Flashget - http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm
FlashGet is a leading download manager and has the highest amount of users on the internet. Unlike Citrix ICA, no server extensions are required.

LogMeIn - https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=en
Their website states "20 million users trust LogMeIn solutions for remote support, access & backup" so that probably says enough.

Useful Applications that don't get their own category

CDBurnerXP - http://cdburnerxp.se/
This is an amazingly useful, free burner application. Although I don't believe it works on Vista yet...

Notepad2 - http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html
It's basically notepad but more helpful for doing code and stuff in. It's just notepad with more functionality; which makes life a bit easier. Code highlighting is handy and it doesn't need installing and it doesn't touch your registry. It's safe, simple and very useful.

Thunderbird - http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/thunderbird/
Mozilla's alternative to Outlook. It's just brilliant, possibly the best email client I've ever used; which I use on a day-to-day basis.

7Zip - http://www.7-zip.org/
WinRAR and Winzip need paying for (eventually), 7zip is free and does the same thing. It has desktop search (it searches through all your files and folders for what you've searched for, including your email - which is VERY useful). It will also do RSS updates straight to your desktop, news updates, weather information, to-do lists, notepads, you name it. It does it all.

Games

FreeCiv – <a Meier.

FreeCol - http://www.freecol.org/
Exactly the same but for Colonisation.

References:

This article is one of the top-posts of seopher.com website for more information please log-in to <span class="float-right
